Interesting words: Pallesthesia

The word: Pallesthesia

Definition: Pallesthesia is the sensation of vibration that comes from skin or bone.
Origin: From Greek pallein "to quiver".
Why use it?  Pallesthesia is mostly used in medical contexts, in particular, it is tested when a doctor places a tuning fork against your skin.  Absence of pallesthesia, or an exaggerated sense of it, can be symptomatic of various neurological conditions.

But I think it deserves wider use! Right now, it is very rare indeed: According to Google ngram, it is 1 in every 1,449,275,262 words. But pallesthesia does occur outside of a medical office. It can happen when you are holding something that vibrates, or touching something that vibrates.

Example uses:

  • I don't like electric toothbrushes because they give me annoying pallesthesia.
  • Deaf people can experience music through pallesthesia
