Book Review: Imago by Octavia Butler

Book: Imago

Year published: 1989
Date finished: January 11, 2018
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: 8/10

Review: Imago is the third in the Xenogenesis series, following Dawn and Adulthood Rites, which I reviewed here and here.  You should definitely read these three books in order. Imago is mostly the adventures of Jodahs, who is a construct ooloi.  Jodahs is, in fact, the first construct ooloi and he has to learn as he goes about how his life will work.

A lot of his adventures are among human resisters, the last remnants of humanity that refuses to either mate with the Oankali or emigrate to Mars. Partly, this is because they don't know they can migrate (and have their fertility restored).

For me, the best part of Imago was learning more about the Oankali, one of the most interesting races of aliens I have come across. But Butler also shines with her description of the human societies that she describes and how they cope with the Oankali.

About the Author: Octavia Butler was an American science fiction writer.  She won the Hugo and Nebula awards multiple times and won a MacArthur fellowship.  She died in 2006.
